Versailles

This morning, we visited Versailles. Our reviews of this experience are mixed.  It was ornate gold stuff, and more ornate gold stuff, followed by more ornate gold stuff.  At one point, I stopped taking pictures and wondered how many French people he could have fed instead of creating this extreme rococo palace.

I am still glad I went.  We got some great pictures, and we really enjoyed the morning together.  I have always wanted to see this place, and the level of extravagence does not disappoint.

The most impressive art was on the ceilings.  Every inch of every room is plastered with intricate art and sculpture; my eyes did not know where to look, so I opted to focus on the ceiling art.

The king's private chapel.

The royal apartment.

This place was crowded!  I cannot even imaging the numbers that flock here in the summer.  Also, for some reason, a Japanese kid insisted on taking a picture with Isaac in the Hall of Mirrors.

If I take from Louis XIV's decor style, I guess I should have 3 paintings and 2 sculptures of myself in my bedroom.  I guess when you are king for 70+ years, you acquire a lot of portraits.

This is one of my favorite pictures of Isaac ever.  He had to stand there for several minutes in the freezing wind while I waited for all the people to walk out of the picture...he's such a patient guy.

The gardens were beautiful, but it was a little too cold to enjoy them fully.  The frozen fountain was pretty cool, though.

Isaac's reaction to Versailles (Don't let him fool you.  He enjoyed taking pictures and wandering around together).

On the way home, we found the best patesserie yet! I loved my swan cream puff!
In 5th grade I did a report about France, and my Mom and I made cream puffs for the class.  I will never forget the intense amount of work (in my 10-year-old memory) that goes into pastries like this, so I will forever appreciate the delicate art of the cream puff.

We went again to our favorite little place for dinner (This place literally seats 10 people!) where we watched a barbaric French rugby match on TV.

  1. Wow. What incredible art. Thank you so much for sharing it. I'm so jealous of that trip. I'm glad you two are there and having so much fun 'working.' Love you both.

  2. We loved Versailles. The downside was the line to get in. Did you see the monkey riding a goat?
